"Weed The People"
(Staff Editorial)

I wrote this story my second year on "The Generator" staff, when the upcoming vote to legalize marijuana in Michigan was a very hot button topic. I wanted balanced coverage showcasing both sides' arguments, while still presenting a thought-out and educated opinion, that reflected how our staff felt about the upcoming vote. My efforts were rewarded with an honorable mention at 2019 MIPA spring awards.

Spring 2018 saw the rise in popularity of vaping, especially among high school students. At the time, Juuling was seen as a safe way to smoke, so I wanted to be on the front lines informing our readers of the possible risks associated with vaping. Since this was published, vaping has become a national crisis. I received an honorable mention award from MIPA for this story my first year in staff.

In my three years on "The Generator" staff This is the story I am most proud of. I wanted to write an article that addressed the issue of why our school doesn't have feminine hygiene dispensers in the women's bathrooms. As a direct result of my article, administration confirmed they would be installing dispensers before the end of the school year. This taught me so much about the real-life impact of journalism and how I have the power to create real change

The December edition of the newspaper was focused around media literacy and I was excited to finally be able to cover a topic I've always wanted to: underage sexting. I wanted to make it interesting and informative without being too graphic or unprofessional and I think I found a good medium. There is a very fine line between being risky and risqué, that I had to keep in mind when writing the article. I also chose to do an anonymous interview with students who had their nudes exposed. I think the stories of their experiences spoke volumes about the real issue and opened a lot of people's eyes to the reality of the situation.

One of my favorite stories I ever wrote was about how MHSAA discriminates against boys who want to participate in competitive cheerleading. This hit close to home because our school has a boy who is on the cheerleading team and isn't allowed to compete. I felt it was important to share his story and give some insight to his struggles and the struggles of male cheerleaders across the state of Michigan.

I wanted to write a story about the drama wars I had been seeing between celebrities on social media, because I began to see the pop culture trend bleed into the high school hallways. Cyber bullying is a topic that is very important to me, so I wanted to cover the issue in a way that related back to our school and addressed the way this phenomenon could negatively effect society.
